A Month-Long Celebration for Volunteers!

Everyone has a favorite month of the year.  For Santa, it’s December.  Leprechauns have March.  For a Volunteer Services Manager at Covenant Hospice, like your’s truly, it’s April all the way–no doubt about it.  This year, National Volunteer Week falls on April 15th through 21st.  It’s the week that our country has set aside to honor and celebrate all of those who so generously donate their time to causes close to their hearts.  For goodness sake, the President takes time out of his busy schedule to write (ok, maybe sign) an official Proclamation about it.  This is serious, people.  So serious here at Covenant Hospice, in fact, that much like my “birthday month” of August, we have evolved into celebrating all  30 glorious April days!

The simple fact is, our volunteers are WORTH IT.  I’m telling you, they’re amazing.  They serve as a constant source of both motivation and inspiration to me, personally, and I see every single day the effect that they have on our patients and their families.  I’ve been working here 8 years.  Count ’em…8.  Every day of those 8 years there’s been something new and exciting going on in my department.  A volunteer comes up with an idea of new ways to help, new gifts and talents to share, new yummy desserts to cook (one of my personal favorites!).  There’s never a dull moment, never a shortage of great hugs, never a week that goes by without me getting teary-eyed or goose-pimply because of some awesome act of a volunteer.

Personally, I’m not a “numbers-inspired” person.  Unlike some accountants I know, a spreadsheet just doesn’t do it for me.  But, in this case, I think you’ll agree that these numbers will knock your socks right on off:

In 2011:

  • Covenant Hospice had 2,684 active volunteers.  That’s 2.32 volunteers for every 1 patient served.
  • 30% of Covenant’s patients and family received a direct service from a volunteer in 2011.
  • Volunteers donated over 92,000 hours to Covenant’s mission in 2011.  That is the cost-savings equivalent of over $1,734,000.00!
  • In 2011, volunteers drove over 440,000 unreimbursed miles for Covenant Hospice.  Now that’s committment.

This month, in all of our service areas, Volunteer Services Managers are putting together banquets to honor and appreciate our volunteers for all the big and little things that they do for our organization all year long.  Stories will be shared, tears will be shed, awards will be given, food (and dessert!) will be eaten!  I simply cannot wait.  Now, get out there and celebrate National Volunteer Month Covenant Hospice-style!  The month is already half over!

Are you thinking of becoming a Covenant Hospice volunteer?  Call us today to find out how easy it is to get started and join in on the fun!   We’re waiting to hear from you!

  1. I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the wonderful people who volunteer with Covenant. During these tough times it’s easy to become focused on just trying to look out for yourself. To see people continue to give of themselves to help others reminds us of what is truly important in life.
