We Honor Veterans – Partner Level Three

We announced an exciting achievement last week! If you missed it, we have reached Partner Level Three Status with the We Honor Veterans campaign just over one year after becoming a program participant. As the only Level Three partner serving northwest Florida and south Alabama, we have developed and integrated specialized care plans for Veterans and their families, created Veteran-specific educational material and provided outreach to staff, volunteers and the community.

For VP of Clinical Services Pam Edwards, participation in the program is an extension of the commitment she made when she became a nurse in the Army. “It was my honor to care for our service members in peacetime as well as war,” said Edwards. “Now, I’m proud to continue caring for Veterans and their families with Covenant Hospice and I am excited we have achieved another milestone within the We Honor Veterans program.” Edwards, the daughter of Marine who served during WWII, Korea and Vietnam, has been a passionate supporter of our participation in the program since we began as a Recruit in March of 2011. Her experience and expertise continue to help move the program forward.

By recognizing the unique needs of Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, we are able to accompany and guide Veterans and their families toward a more peaceful ending. “There are many things that come into play when working with Veterans,” said Edwards. “Knowing their branch of service, combat experience and whether they were an officer or enlisted is important because it helps us provide them with resources and tools that are appropriate for them and their families.” The resources of We Honor Veterans focus on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgement, coupled with Veteran-centric education of health care staff caring for Veterans.

“By achieving Partner Level Three Status, we are demonstrating our continued promise to help our staff and volunteers understand and serve Veterans at the end of life,” said Dale O. Knee, Covenant Hospice president & CEO.  “America’s Veterans are a significant part of the communities we serve and we are proud to participate in this distinguished program that is sensitive to their needs during a difficult time.”

If you are a Veteran or active duty military personnel and would like to learn about volunteering for Covenant Hospice please contact the branch office nearest you. Volunteers help us honor patients who are Veterans by presenting certificates and pins. This simple act has a profound impact on Veterans nearing the end of life.
