Helping Children though the Holidays

by Erik Persson – Sr. PIC-TFK Social Worker

Covenant Hospice is committed to serving patients, families, and also children by offering specialized support. Our “Coping with the Holidays for Children” group activities offer time to reflect and remember loved ones who have died. The groups are held throughout the Covenant Hospice service areas and always receive a warm response.

One recent activity was held outside, under the rolling oak trees, where 8 bereaved children shared their personal stories of losses. The children expressed gratitude for special memories experienced with their deceased loved ones. One little girl, smiled brightly as she said, “I love Nanna and the Christmas cookies we made together.” The children in the group told many stories of relatives and some spoke with great joy over having family members who had served in the military. The children were encouraged to know they were not alone in their feelings and realized the experience of grief is something we all eventually face and endure. They began to understand the need of support from others.

Helping Children though the HolidaysMany of the children who attended have also participated in other activities offered at Covenant Hospice. The children have seemed to develop unique friendships among each other and build lasting bonds to see them through the journey of grief. It will be wonderful to see how these friendships continue into the future.
